The moment fans and players all over the world have been waiting for finally arrived on Friday and a breathtaking opening ceremony marked a perfect start to the 2006 FIFA World Cup Germany.
Viewers tuning in all over the globe were greeted by a feast for the eyes and the ears, orchestrated by German theatre director Christian Stuckl. Around 1,400 dancers and musicians took to the field for an entertaining blend of traditional Bavarian folk music, hip-hop from Berlin band 'Seeed' and other acts from the rest of the world.
However, the undoubted climax of the show was when superstar model Claudia Schiffer and football legend Pele carried the coveted FIFA World Cup Trophy onto the stage as some 170 previous winners looked on.
The appearance of an array of former world champions at the opening ceremony is sure to have been the largest ever gathering of international football superstars. Germany's winning sides from 1954, 1974 and 1990 were also represented at the star-studded parade.
